Mu
8 × 10 × 3/4 in, ready to hang
Original calligraphy painting digitally inverted and printed onto eco-friendly wood that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
I painted the original during the American Group Psychotherapy Association’s Annual Meeting in San Francisco in 2015. I had flown in from Japan, where I had been living, to attend this professional family reunion of sorts for me. I was at once happy to be back in my professional “home” and a stranger to San Francisco.
The character 木 (pronounced “mu”) means wood in Chinese. Two 木‘s make the character 林, which means woods. Three 木‘s stacked in a pyramid make the character 森, which means forest. But am I really writing 木 over and over again? Or am I painting tents? This is all a dream.
